TEMPORARY UTILITIES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01     DESCRIPTION

A.         General:
Furnish, install and maintain temporary utilities and facilities as required for construction, and remove such temporary facilities on completion of the work.

B.         Related work specified elsewhere:
Section 01521:  Field offices and Sheds

1.02     SUBMITTALS

A.         The Contractor shall request Owner approval as follows:
1.   The request for utilities connections shall include a design and installation package type of materials, methods, test procedures, and work specifications. Water and electric meters shall be supplied by the Contractor.

3.   The Contractor may not interrupt any service without prior written approval of the Owner.
4.   Contractor shall request inspection of the work by the Owner prior to final connection and backfilling. The Contractor shall perform all testing of HV/LV cables, transformers, meters and piping.
5.   The Contractor ;shall obtain excavation approval from the Owner prior to initiating any subsurface work. Road crossing must be completed within 48 hours and must include repair of road. A copy of the Owner excavation approval must be in the possession of the person in-charge at the excavation site.

1.03     QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.         Regulatory Requirements
1.   Comply with Government and Municipal codes and regulations and with utilitycompany requirements.
2.   Comply with National Electric Code.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01     MATERIALS, GENERAL
A.         Materials may be new or used, but must be adequate in capacity for the required usage, must not create unsafe conditions, and must not violate requirements of applicable codes and standards.
2.02     TEMPORARY ELECTRICITY AND LIGHTING

A.         Contractor shall provide adequate temporary electrical power for the construction site. Generating equipment shall be of sufficient capacity to adequately supply all electrical needs of the construction site. Generating equipment area distribution boxes, circuits and branch wiring shall be approved by the Owner prior to installation.

B.         Contractor shall install circuit and branch wiring with area distribution boxes located so that power and lighting is available throughout the construction by the use of construction-type power cords.

C.        Contractor shall provide adequate artificial lighting for all areas of work when natural light is not adequate for work and for areas accessible to the public.

2.03     TEMPORARY HEATING, COOLING AND VENTILATION

A.         Provide temporary heating, cooling and ventilation as required to maintain adequate environmental conditions to facilitate progress of the work, to meet specified minimum conditions for the installation of materials and to protect materials and finishes from damage due to temperature or humidity.

B.         Provide adequate forced ventilation of enclosed areas for curing of installation materials, to disperse humidity, and to prevent hazardous accumulations of dust, fumes, vapors or gases.

C.        Portable heaters shall be standard approved units complete with controls.

D.        When permanent air-conditioning system, or suitable portion thereof is in operating conditions, such system may be used for temporary cooling, provided that Contractor obtains written approval of the Owner, assumes full responsibility for entire cooling system and pays costs for operation, maintenance and restoration of system.

E.         Make periodic inspections of the cooling equipment and controls to ensure proper operation of the system, as conditions require and pay cost of energy consumed by all trades.

2.04     TEMPORARY TELEPHONE SERVICE

A.         Provide five direct line telephone service at the construction site for the use of personnel and employees from a connection point indicated by the Owner.

B.         Pay all costs for installation, maintenance and removal, and service charge for all calls.

2.05 TEMPORARY WATER

A.         Contractor shall provide adequate temporary water supply for construction purposes on the site and maintain it. The connection point to the existing water supply system will be indicated by the Owner. If the existing supply is inadequate for the construction, the Contractor shall obtain water from another source.

B.         Install branch piping with taps located so that water is available throughout the construction by the use of houses.

C.        Provide an adequate supply of drinking water from approved sources of acceptable quality,

drinking water in suitable containers and provide disposable cups for use of employees. Drinking water dispensers shall be conveniently located in buildings where work is in progress.

2.06     FIRE PROTECTION

A.         The Contractor shall be held responsible for providing adequate fire protection in way of water tanks, fire extinguisher and the like. All inflammable liquids, gases and the like shall be stored in an isolated and secured area of the Site with adequate signs posted. Such areas containing inflammable materials shall be security locked. Construction should be in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association Practice.

2.07     DISPOSAL OF SURFACE WATER

A.         The Contractor shall be responsible for forming all ditches, sumps, runs off and the like for disposing of natural water including the use of pumps and their apparatus necessary to prevent excavations and the Site becoming flooded or unworkable.

2.08 SITE TOILETS

A.         The Contractor shall provide suitable temporary site toilets for the use of his workforce and that of the Sub-contractors. Such toilets shall be flush toilets in sufficient number to properly serve the needs of the entire workforce. Such toilets shall be continuously maintained and disinfected and upon completion of the Works shall be cleared away, septic tanks or access pits (if any) shall be emptied and removed and the ground reinstated. Sitting of the toilets is to be approved by the Owner.




PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01     GENERAL

A.         Maintain and operate utilities and facilities to ensure continuous service.

B.         Modify and extend utilities and facilities as work progress requires.

3.02 REMOVAL

A.         Construction Debris Disposal:
1.   Contractor shall remove all debris from the Construction Site.
a) Daily
b) Upon completion of construction
c) Prior to Final Payment
2.   All debris shall be transported in an enclosed truck to an approved Municipal Dump Site.
3.   Disposal by any other means or at any other location is expressly prohibited.

B.         Completely remove temporary materials and equipment when their use is no longer required.

C.        Clean and repair damage caused by temporary installations or use of temporary facilities.

D.        Restore permanent facilities used for temporary services to specified conditions.
